Crafting a Classic Fold-Over Leather Card Wallet – From Laser Cut to Hand Stitching

Crafting a Classic Fold-Over Leather Card Wallet – From Laser Cut to Hand Stitching

Central to the art of leathercraft is the harmonious interplay of precision and individuality. In this presentation, I invite you to explore the intricate process behind the creation of a minimalist fold-over leather cardholder. This piece is meticulously crafted using advanced laser cutting technology to ensure unparalleled accuracy, complemented by traditional hand-stitching techniques that impart both character and lasting durability.

🧵 Materials I Used

  • Leather: Buttero leather

Known for its smooth texture, deep color, and natural finish. It ages beautifully and adds elegance to any small accessory.

  • Thread: Lin Cable thread

This waxed linen thread is ideal for saddle stitching. It’s strong, smooth, and consistent in color — perfect for clean lines and durability.

🛠️ Why I Used a Laser Cutter

This cardholder was cut using a laser cutter, including the stitch holes. Here’s why:

  • 🧩 Perfect Pattern Accuracy: Every edge, curve, and hole is consistent — ideal for refining templates.

  • 🧰 Preparation for DIY Kits: I’m currently developing leather DIY kits, and laser cutting ensures that anyone — even beginners — can assemble the product smoothly.

  • 🧼 Clean Edges: Less sanding, less error, and more time to focus on the fun part: stitching and finishing.

📸 The Making Process

  1. Designing & Patterning

I started with a classic fold-over shape that fits cards comfortably while remaining slim in the pocket.

  2. Laser Cutting

Each piece was cut and pre-punched for stitching using a laser cutter, ensuring a precise fit.

  3. Hand Stitching

Using Lin Cable thread, I hand-stitched the pieces together using the saddle stitch technique — durable, beautiful, and timeless.

  4. Edge Finishing

Edges were carefully smoothed and finished to complete the clean look.

🔜 Coming Soon: DIY Kits

This project isn’t just a finished product — it’s a prototype for something bigger. I’m working on releasing this design as a leather DIY kit for those who want to experience the joy of making something with their own hands.

Stay tuned — and if you’re interested in a kit like this, let me know in the comments!
